Complete Your Project

Trex Signature deck boards are the closest composite gets to engineered hardwood. Low-repeat grain, a matte finish that kills the plastic sheen most composites have in direct sun, and a 50-year limited residential warranty on both the structure and the colour.

This is the board you buy when the deck is the feature, not the afterthought. It is also the only Trex line certified at 92.6% recycled content by weight rather than the 95.4% used across the rest of the range, because the denser cap and the deeper grain need more virgin material to hold the detail.

Choosing between Whidbey and Ocracoke

Whidbey is a cool grey with a fine, misty grain. It reads modern, sits well against white or black trim, and hides pollen and light dust better than warm tones.

Ocracoke is a warm sand-driftwood tone. It reads coastal, pairs with natural stone and cedar siding, and shows less of the fine grit that blows onto a deck near a beach or a gravel drive.

Both are multi-tonal, so no two boards land identically. Dry-lay a course before you fasten and shuffle boards you do not like the look of. Order all your Signature in one go where you can, since colour is matched by production run.

Sizes, profiles and lengths

Nominal 1" x 6". Actual 0.94" x 5-1/2". Solid bottom, capped on three sides, 2.5 lb per linear foot.

Grooved edge comes in 12, 16 and 20 ft and takes hidden fasteners, so the finished surface has no visible screws.

Square edge comes in 16 and 20 ft and face screws. Use it for the perimeter board, for stair treads and anywhere a board edge will be seen.

Most decks need both. Run grooved through the field and square edge around the border.

How many boards you need

A 5-1/2" board with a 3/16" gap covers about 0.47 sq ft per linear foot. So a 12 ft board covers roughly 5.7 sq ft, a 16 ft board 7.6 sq ft, and a 20 ft board 9.5 sq ft.

Divide your deck area by the coverage of the length you are buying, then add 10% for cuts. Add more if you are running boards diagonally or picture-framing the border. Call (815) 439-3325 with your deck dimensions and we will do the count with you.

Joist spacing and stair rules

Straight runs: 16" on centre for residential decks. Diagonal runs: drop to 12" on centre at 45 degrees, or 14" at 60 degrees. Commercial: 12" on centre.

Signature stair treads need stringers at 12" on centre maximum. Boards are made up to 3" longer than the stated length, so a 16 ft board gives you a genuine 16 ft of usable run.

Gapping

Leave 3/16" between board sides and 1/8" between board ends at 60F or warmer. Below 40F, open the end gaps to 3/16". Composite moves with temperature, and skipping this is the most common cause of buckling on a new deck.

Hidden fasteners: grooved edge boards take the Trex Hideaway Universal Hidden Fastener or Hideaway Deck Plugs. Square edge boards face screw with composite deck screws. Shop Trex screws and fasteners in the same order so nothing holds up your build.

What the 50-year warranty actually covers

The Trex Decking, Fascia and Cladding Limited Warranty runs 50 years residential and 10 years commercial on Signature. Fade and stain sits inside the same document, not a separate policy: colour change is held to 5 Delta E for the first 25 years and 15 Delta E for the remainder. The warranty transfers once, which matters if you sell the house.

Register the product after install. Trex requires registration for coverage, and it is the step most people skip.

Finish the deck

Wrap the rim joist and stair risers in matching Trex Signature fascia and riser boards, or run Universal white if you want the deck surface to read against a bright trim line.

Questions we get asked

Does Signature get hot in the sun? Yes, like any composite in direct sun. Signature does not have the heat-mitigating technology that Transcend Lineage has. If barefoot comfort on a south-facing deck is the priority, Lineage is the better pick.

Will it scratch? The Signature cap is the hardest in the Trex range and handles furniture and dog claws well. Dragging cast iron or a loaded planter across it will still leave a mark. Use furniture pads.

Can I put a grill on it? Yes, on a mat. Keep any heat source clear of the surface and clean grease promptly, since fat left to sit is what causes staining, not the heat.

Do I need to seal or stain it? No. Soap and water, and a soft brush for anything stubborn. No sanding, no sealing, ever.

Can I curve it? Not by cold bending. Curves are cut, not formed, so plan a wider board layout at the curve and expect more offcut.

The Trex Decking, Fascia & Cladding Limited Warranty provides comprehensive coverage, ensuring products are free from material defects, will not split, splinter, rot, or suffer damage from termites or fungal decay.

The warranty spans up to 50 years for residential use and includes fade, stain, scratch, and mold resistance, supported by a product constructed from 95% reclaimed wood and plastic.

It's applicable to various products with specific terms for residential and commercial applications and is transferable under certain conditions.

Notably, this warranty requires adherence to specified care and installation guidelines to maintain validity.
