Deck Flashing & Moisture Barriers
Deck flashing stops water tracking off the deck into the house wall. The ledger connection is where most deck failures begin, and it is the one joint nobody can inspect once the siding goes back on.
This part is not optional. The 2021 IRC model code calls for corrosion-resistant metal or an approved nonmetallic material at the ledger. Editions and local amendments differ, so confirm with your building department. Never caulk the drainage path shut.
