Trex Deck Maintenance: What You Actually Need to Know
Trex is sold as a low-maintenance deck material - and that's true. But low maintenance doesn't mean no maintenance. A little regular cleaning goes a long way toward keeping boards looking sharp and holding up to the warranty standards Trex provides.
Routine Cleaning Is Simple
For everyday dirt and debris, a broom or leaf blower followed by a rinse with a garden hose handles most of it. For stuck-on grime, a soft-bristle brush and mild dish soap does the job - scrub along the grooves, then rinse thoroughly. That covers the majority of cleaning situations most homeowners will ever encounter.
Pressure Washing: Fine If Done Right
Trex boards can handle a pressure washer, but the settings matter. Keep pressure under 3,100 PSI, use a fan tip, and hold the nozzle at least 8 inches from the surface. Too close or too much pressure and you risk gouging the board face - which no warranty covers.
Stains, Mold, and Hard Water
Spills are best handled immediately. For mold or mildew - more common in shaded or damp areas - a soapy water solution and soft brush clears it without damaging the surface. Hard water spots respond well to white vinegar. What you want to avoid entirely: bleach, acid-based cleaners, and anything abrasive.
Winter Care
Snow removal on Trex means a plastic-tipped shovel only - metal edges scratch composite surfaces. Calcium chloride or rock salt are both safe for melting ice without surface damage.
